Visalia high school student killed in Fresno County crash, CHP says. Another teen hurt

One teen died and another was hurt in a rollover crash in rural Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

A 2007 GMC Sierra driven by a 17-year-old from Visalia was headed east on Highway 198 near Dickenson Avenue, about five miles west of Lemoore Station, before 1 a.m. Saturday, the CHP said.

The Fresno County Coroner identified Nathan Oliva, a Mt. Whitney High School student in Visalia, as the 17-year-old who died. A 19-year-old from Visalia was also in the truck, CHP said.

Oliva was driving at about 60 mph and for an unknown reason allowed the truck to veer to the right onto the dirt shoulder before hitting an irrigation ditch and rolling onto its roof, CHP said.

The driver was not wearing a restraint and was ejected during the crash, CHP said. The passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

Officers could not immediately say if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
