Fresno CHP finds overturned Corvette, driver dead after a crash in Laton

Roadway fatality

UPDATE: Driver killed identified by coroner

In one of two deadly crashes involving sports cars on rain-slick roads Sunday, the California Highway Patrol reported the driver of a Chevrolet Corvette was found dead in the overturned vehicle early Sunday.

The driver of a Nissan 350Z died the same day near Reedley.

CHP spokesman Mike Salas said that about 3:20 a.m, officers were alerted to an overturned vehicle on Mt. Whitney Avenue at Fatima Avenue in Laton. Arriving officers found the Corvette and a deceased 22-year-old man.

A preliminary investigation determined that the man, from Laton, lost control on the wet roadway while approaching a curve while speeding and slammed into a utility pole. The Corvette continued through several residential fences, struck a parked car and overturned.

Salas said officers believe alcohol is a factor in the crash, but the investigation is continuing.
