One dead in a second major head-on collision on Madera County highway over the weekend
The California Highway Patrol confirmed a fatality in a head-on crash on Highway 99 early Sunday morning, the second in Madera County over the weekend that have left five dead in total.
The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 near Avenue 18 1/2 around 12:30 a.m. when a white truck traveling on the wrong side of the highway struck another vehicle.
The truck caught fire, and after it was extinguished, the victim was located inside. Four people in the SUV were transported to Community Regional Medical Center with moderate to major injuries. There was no update on their conditions later Sunday, CHP officer Javier Ruvalcaba said.
On Friday night, four people were killed in a fiery head-on collision on Highway 41 near Highway 145.
There were two victims in each vehicle, a four-door black Honda Accord and possibly a two-door Scion. The driver of one of the two vehicles involved in the collision was believed to have been driving recklessly in the minutes before the crash, according to the CHP.
The victims on the 99 or the 41 have not yet been identified.
