Fresno woman killed in crash into canal, CHP says. Accident may have been hours earlier

California Highway Patrol

A woman was discovered in a Fresno County canal after a fatal car crash Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The report of a car in a canal along Dinuba Avenue between Plumas and Adams avenues came in at about 4:50 a.m., CHP said. Water was in the canal.

Investigators are still determining when the crash happened, because the 911 caller reporting the vehicle did not witness the accident, officer Mike Salas said.

The initial investigation shows the 30-year-old woman driving was headed east and allowed the Honda Accord to veer to the right and strike a pole, CHP said. The car then traveled over an embankment and into a canal.

Power in the area went out around midnight, Salas said, but officers have not determined if that was related to the car striking the pole.

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies were the first law enforcement at the scene and determined the woman was still in the car, CHP said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fresno woman’s name has not been released pending the notification of the next of kin.
