Update: Woman killed by Amtrak train in Fresno. Police say she was on the tracks
A woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Fresno just before 11 a.m. Friday, police said.
The woman was on the BNSF tracks near Santa Fe and West avenues, just south of Gettysburg Avenue, when the fatal collision occurred, according to officer Felipe Uribe.
Police received multiple 911 calls about 10:30 a.m. after for unknown reasons the woman ignored the train’s horn, flashing lights and crossing arms, Uribe said. She did not appear to make an effort to leave the tracks, he said.
The Amtrak train engineer attempted to stop the northbound train, but trains do not stop easily, Uribe said
Little is immediately known about the woman, Uribe said, noting the Fresno County Coroner’s Office will look into the woman’s background.
“Always expect the train when crossing the railroad tracks,” he said. “Even though the train may be on the tracks and looks like it’s moving at a slow speed and it’s far, it’s not. It’s moving fast.”
BNSF officials were also at the scene to do their own investigation, police said.
