Motorcyclist struck by SUV on a Fresno highway. He was lying on roadway and got help
A motorcyclist was injured Tuesday evening in a hit-and-run crash on a Fresno highway.
The collision took place at 8:30 p.m. on southbound Highway 41, near the Bullard Avenue on-ramp when an SUV collided with the motorcyclist, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Nicholas Norton said.
The motorcyclist was lying on the roadway and a good Samaritan pulled him out of the lanes. Officers and emergency medical services workers arrived and took the man, who was reported to be in his 60s, to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries to his lower body.
Norton said the driver of the SUV fled the scene and was believed to have run up the embankment onto city streets. CHP gave the suspect description to the Fresno Police Department to be on the lookout.
Officers located the suspect and detained him at Lithia Ford at East Auto Center Drive and requested CHP and identified him as the driver of the SUV.
The suspect had minor injuries and was charged with driving under the influence and hit-and-run. He was not identified.
Norton said it is not known how the driver struck the motorcyclist.
“I don’t know if it’s a lane change or he rear-ended him,” he said. “At this point, we don’t have those details.”
The motorcyclist is expected to survive his injuries, Norton said.
