Fresno man killed after colliding with fence post near Highway 180, impaling him, CHP says

A 29-year-old Fresno man died Tuesday night after colliding with a fence post near an on-ramp to Highway 180.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Ranger said the crash happened at 8:43 p.m., when the man was driving his Hyundai Genesis at East Kings Canyon Road and Temperance Avenue, near Highway 180, at a high rate of speed.

Ranger said it appeared the driver thought he was on Highway 180 or didn’t realize the road was ending when he collided with a fence post that dislodged and impaled the driver.

UPDATE: Victim identified by coroner’s office

The vehicle continued, Ranger said, and went airborne and mounted on the embankment on the south side of Highway 180 and overturned after hitting the ground again before it came to rest on the south embankment on eastbound Highway 180, east of Temperance.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the single-vehicle collision.

There were no witnesses to the collision, but a resident nearby heard the crash and called 911, and a driver passed by and saw debris, Ranger said.
