Man dies after SUV crashes into tree in southeast Fresno, CHP reports

A 60-year-old man was killed Saturday after his SUV struck a tree in southeast Fresno, the California Highway Patrol reported.

A call for assistance came in just before 9:30 a.m. for the accident near Butler and Sunnyside avenues.

CHP spokesman Mike Salas said the man was driving a Ford Edge west on Butler Avenue, west of Sunnyside, when the SUV veered off the road in a southwesterly direction and crashed into a tree.

There was major damage to the vehicle. The driver, the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, Salas said. The driver was identified Sunday as Jeffrey Zoulek of Fresno.

What led up the crash remained under investigation; officers were looking at the possibility the man may have suffered a medical emergency before losing control.

Alcohol or drugs were not suspected to be a factor. The man was wearing a seat belt, Salas said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CHP at 559-705-2200.
