Two killed in fiery collision near Caruthers. What the CHP says caused crash

Two people died early Monday morning in a fiery collision involving a commercial truck hauling almonds and a pickup, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Sgt. Mike Salas said the crash took place about 6:30 a.m. as the Fresno driver of the big rig, identified as Nahum Calderon, 60, was westbound on Kamm Avenue approaching Jameson Avenue. At the same time, the driver of a Chevrolet pickup was northbound on Jameson and failed to yield for a stop sign at Kamm. Calderon was unable to avoid a collision, and the Chevrolet collided with the rear axle of the big rig and burst into flames. Both the driver and a passenger died at the scene.

It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision and the identities of the deceased will be released by the Fresno County Coroner.
