Man dies after trying to rescue a little girl in Kings River, authorities say

A fisherman on the Kings River near Avocado Lake drowned Tuesday after attempting to save a little girl.

He was identified Wednesday morning by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Arthur Caballero, 62, of Fresno.

The girl was seen struggling in the river at Winton Park around 4 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. Caballero spotted what was going on and rushed to help.

But as he reached for the girl, he fell out of his boat and was swept away downstream.

The sheriff’s helicopter, Eagle 1, located Caballero and a rescue boat arrived to retrieve him. Caballero was in the water for 45 minutes, authorities said.

He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The child is OK after family members pulled her to safety.
