Smoky fire catches the eye of Fresno freeway drivers. Luckily, firefighters were near
Fresno firefighters didn’t have far to go Tuesday afternoon to put out a blaze near two major Fresno freeways – it happened right across the street from Station No. 7.
The grass fire that reached a construction equipment storage area was reported about 3:15 p.m., according to the Fresno Fire Department. It happened in a yard behind a home on Cherry Avenue just north of the ARCO gas station at Jensen Avenue. The fire station is across Cherry.
Thick, black smoke billowed from the blaze at its height, wafting over Highway 41 immediately to the west and Highway 99 to the north.
The fire was contained within 30 minutes.
There were no injuries.
It is unknown what caused the fire or the estimated cost of damage.
An investigation is ongoing.
