Bicyclist hit by truck on popular Fresno-area route. CHP explains how it happened

A bicyclist suffered moderate to major injuries in a collision with a truck Tuesday afternoon in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The CHP said the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Spokesman Mike Salas said the rider, a man in his 60s, was on an “electric mountain bike” southbound on Auberry Road north of the Clovis Castle. The two-lane road is popular with cyclists.

For unknown reasons, the cyclist drifted into the southbound traffic lane directly into the path of an approaching utility work truck approaching from behind.

The truck driver swerved left trying to avoid the cyclist, but the right-side mirror of the truck struck the rider in the head.

The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center.

Salas said neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected as factors.
