Woman pushing shopping cart hit by car, killed north of Madera

A woman pushing a shopping car on Road 26 north of Madera was struck and killed by a driver late Sunday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The CHP said the 55-year-old Susanville victim was found on the roadway north of Haley Way about 10:30 p.m. Investigators determined that she was pushing the cart north across Road 26 when she was struck by a Kia, being driven north of 26 at a speed of 48 mph, when the collision occurred.

CHP said the Kia driver, Jose David Zaragoza 19, of Madera, left the scene and went home because he did not know he hit the pedestrian. Once home, he looked at damage to the car and returned to the scene and cooperated with investigators. Zaragoza was not found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was not booked on any charges.
