CHP: Bicyclist, 70, fatally struck by two vehicles in Madera

A 70-year-old Madera man was fatally struck by two vehicles while riding his bicycle early Monday morning in Madera, California Highway Patrol said.

The man, who was not identified pending notification of his family, was struck around 5:32 a.m. while crossing Road 26, just south of its intersection with Ellis Street.

CHP said the bicyclist was hit by a 2006 GMC, which had a green light as it proceeded through the intersection. Its driver, Nicanor CarlosGarcia, 37, of Chowchilla, pulled over and called 911. He was not arrested.

As he was returning to the scene of the accident, CHP said, CarlosGarcia saw a 1999 Toyota Camry also hit the bicyclist, who was in the No. 1 lane of southbound Road 26 after being thrown from his bike from the force of the first collision.

The driver of the Toyota, Jaime Rodriguez, 53, of Madera was not arrested. CHP said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and was taken to the Madera County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone information about what happened can call the Madera area CHP office, 559-675-1025.
