Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near Hollister, USGS says

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake rattled residents near Hollister on Wednesday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 7:33 p.m., about 12 miles northwest of Hollister in San Benito County.

The quake was about 4.9 miles in depth, which is considered shallow, according to USGS data. Shallow earthquakes are more common and can cause more surface damage.

No damage or injuries have been reported.
