Clovis Hobby Lobby sets opening date, but this grand opening will look a little different

The long-awaited Hobby Lobby store in Clovis has set an opening date.

The store will open Thursday, July 9 at 9 a.m. for customers age 60 and older and people who are at-risk of complications from COVID-19, and 10 a.m. for the general public.

The craft and home decor store took over the former Toys R Us at 1425 Shaw Ave. near Sunnyside Avenue. Fans of the store have been eagerly awaiting its opening ever since The Bee reported it was coming back in May 2019.

Typically, when Hobby Lobby opens a new store it holds a grand opening event.

When the Blackstone Avenue store in Fresno opened in 2016, hundreds of people showed up, some of them lining up two hours beforehand.

But with the coronavirus pandemic spreading, the Clovis Hobby Lobby won’t be having such an event this week, according to the store manager.

The newest Hobby Lobby coming to Fresno, in the Marketplace at El Paseo near Highway 99 and Herndon Avenue, is scheduled to open later this month, according to the company. It did not give a specific date.

Details: The store’s regular hours will start at 9 a.m for people 60 and older and at-risk shoppers, and 10 a.m. for everyone else. It will close at 8 p.m. The store is open every day but Sunday. 559-297-1201.
