After two furniture stores and 108 years, this Fresno business is closing.

Sanders & Slater Fine Furniture at 48 Herndon Ave. near Blackstone Avenue will start its going-out-of-business sale at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9.

The previous version of the store, Slater’s Furniture on West Shaw Avenue, closed in 2010 after 98 years in business. It was founded the same year the Titanic sank.

It’s closing for a variety of reasons: Times are changing, partner Mark Slater is retiring, and the store’s lease is expiring, the owners said in a news release.

Sanders & Slater sold upscale furniture like Stickley and Theodore Alexander.

“Today’s business trends are changing with new generations of online shoppers,” said co-owner Nick Sanders. “And with Mark’s retirement and our lease being up, our 60 plus years of combined experience told us the time was right to say farewell to our many loyal patrons with the biggest sale in our long and wonderful history.”

Everything in the store must go, including furniture, bedding, accessories and fixtures like shelves.

During the sale, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
