Was it Timberlake? Poll says there were better concerts than Elton John, Willie Nelson in 2019

It’s not easy coming to a consensus with those end-of-the year best-of lists.

For instance, we asked Fresno Bee readers what they thought was the best concert in the city in 2019. There were seven choices, ranging from the big-name performers like Kiss and Elton John to niche acts like Gwar.

While the sample size was small and the poll was in no way scientific, the bulk of the respondents, close to 40%, chose “other,” as in a concert not on our official list.

They could have been talking about:

Justin Timberlake, who finally made it through Fresno on his “Man of the woods” tour. The concert had been postponed at the end of 2018.

One of several big-name country acts, including the relative newcomer Luke Combs, who came to the Save Mart Center in October. That show was a sellout.

Bob Seger, who stopped at the arena for a farewell performance with his Silver Bullet Band.

Forgetting the arena rock tours, any number of more intimate concerts could have also made the list.

The Black Sabbath McDonald’s mash-up band Mac Sabbath brought its rather intricate and totally outrageous parody show to Fulton 55 in June.

Songwriter Jackson Browne played the Warnors Theatr3 in August, undeterred by the heat.

And just last month, the alternative rap collective Brockhampton stopped at the Rainbow Ballroom for a show that was likely missed by anyone over 35 years old.
