New songs, the old classics and ... lasers?? What to expect from Third Eye Blind at Warnors

At first, Brad Hargreaves has a hard time describing what a Third Eye Blind show is like these days.

So, he settles on the lasers.

“Lots of lasers. ... Can’t get enough of the lasers,” says Hargreaves, who along with singer/guitarist Stephan Jenkins has been the backbone of the band since 1995.

There’s a laugh in the statement, to let you know he’s joking.

In seriousness, the band — which headlines New Rock 104.1’s Ho Ho Christmas show on Thursday, Dec. 12 at Warnors Theatre — continues to do what it has always done.

That means fans get the classic Third Eye Blind, as Hargreaves calls it. They will play “Semi-Charmed Life” and “Jumper.”

They will also deliver new songs.

On tour, the band has been playing four or five songs off the album “Screamer,” which was released in October. It’s an “improbably infectious” record, according to music website Pitchfork.

“We’ve very much just about being a band and living in the moment,” Hargreaves says.

That’s what separates artists from entertainers, he says.

“Stephan and I have never been interested in just being entertainers.”

This has been a fairly prolific period for Third Eye Blind as artists.

The band released its previous full-length album, “Dopamine,” in 2015 and followed that with two EPs — 2016’s “We Are Drugs” and the 2018 covers album “Thanks for Everything.” And the group already is into a new batch of song, work-shopping songs during soundchecks. Hargreaves says the recording process should start early next year.

“Song are coming quite fast,” he says.

That’s partly because of the working relationship between Jenkins and Colin CreeV, who joined the band in March as a keyboard player, guitarist and back-up singer — and who co-wrote parts of “Screamer.”

“We’ve seen the entire spectrum of health that a band can be in,” says Hargreaves, hinting no doubt at the turmoil with record labels and former members that kept that band tied up during much of the 2000s.

“We’re just,” he says, “in a really good zone right now.”
