Taco trucks take over Chukchansi Park

The Fresno Grizzlies welcomed 14,651 fans, the second-largest crowd in Chukchansi Park baseball history, on Thursday, Aug. 18 for the sixth annual Taco Truck Throwdown.

A record 32 competing taco trucks in and around Chukchansi Park served up 34,820tacos, slightly less than 2015’s record of 37,954, according to the Grizzlies. El Premio Mayor successfully defended its People’s Choice Championship, winning their second consecutive fan popular vote, and also took top prize in the Judge’s Ballot. The People’s Choice trophy was renamed in honor of El Premio Mayor’s Adrian Loza, an enthusiastic proponent of the Taco Throwdown who died earlier this year.

El Premio Mayor also won the fan vote last year when nearly 17,000 people packed the stadium.

People’s Choice als-rans were El Mexicano, Maria’s Tacos, La Elegante and Gerardo’s Tacos; Judge’s Ballot also-rans were Tako BBQ, El Sabor De Michoacan, Taqueria Gonzalez, Taco Boys and Papa Mike’s Mobile Cafe.

The Grizzlies, wearing their Fresno Tacos jerseys, beat the Omaha Storm Chasers 2-1 on Colin Moran’s two-out RBI single in the 11th inning to score Alejandro Garcia from second base.

Fresno snapped its longest overall and home losing streak this season, five games. The Fresno Tacos improved to 7-3 this season, and are 9-4 all-time after a 2-1 showing in 2015.
