Letters to the Editor
On Dec. 9, you printed a letter from Mr. Howard K. Watkins regarding Republicans and Obamacare. He wrote; "Much like when Democrats enacted Social Security, and later Medicare, Republicans also opposed those programs, crying socialism."
The Republican vote on Medicare was split with 70 yes and 68 no in the House and 13 yes and 17 no in the Senate. Social Security passed in 1935 with 81 House Republicans voting yes and 15 no (coincidently there were 15 Democrats who voted against). In the Senate, the Republican vote was 16 yes and five no.
If the Republicans really are against the legislation Mr. Watkins references, why so many yes votes?
