We need answers

Here’s everything we know about the Patterson ICE shooting, and what we don’t,” (fresnobee.com, April 11)

The April 7 shooting of Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez in Patterson demands far more scrutiny. Federal officials claim Hernandez used his vehicle as a weapon. Yet witness accounts and emerging video raise serious questions, including whether shots were fired before he attempted to flee.

What is not disputed is that Hernandez was shot multiple times during an attempted detention. The normalization of these incidents is deeply troubling. Multiple U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shootings have already occurred in 2026.

Whether Hernandez was fleeing or posing a threat is the central issue. Until independently established, the public should not be asked to accept a conclusion that excuses the use of force.

Support for Barker

Who’s running for Madera County supervisor seats in June? Here are the candidates,” (fresnobee.com, March 26)

I support Melanie Barker as the next Madera County District 5 Supervisor. As a business owner, Barker brings a real-world perspective to the challenges facing our district. She understands the importance of supporting local businesses, encouraging economic growth and making responsible decisions that benefit both families and entrepreneurs.

I appreciate Barker’s commitment to fire protection and public safety.

A new idea

Eliminating farm produce programs won’t solve food insecurity in ag-rich Fresno region | Opinion,” (fresnobee.com, March 23, 2025)

A food forest is a replication of a forest ecosystem or woodland, which can also double as a natural climate solution. It’s a green space that can be filled with trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials and edible plants. Food forests are known to improve air quality, provide food, reduce island heat effects and create habitats.

Our region sees high temperatures each year, and a food forest can help by reducing island heat effects caused by hot weather. A food forest can also help improve air quality by removing carbon in the atmosphere.

Trump’s unapologetic behavior

Trump posted a picture of himself as Jesus. Now he’s trying to explain it away,” (fresnobee.com, April 13)

After President Donald Trump posted a picture of himself as a Jesus-type figure, Vice President JD Vance has the audacity to tell Pope Leo XIV to stay in his own lane. Imagine if President Barack Obama had posted a similar picture — people would be losing their minds.

As usual, there is no admission of a mistake or an apology from Trump because that would require humility and probity.
