Derek Carr as an adviser for former Fresno State QB Jake Haener? ‘Great resource for me’
Former Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener is preparing for the upcoming NFL draft by getting some feedback from Davante Adams and Derek Carr.
“Definitely talked to Derek a little more,” Haener told reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Friday. “Giving me his number and allowing me to reach out whenever I need him. He’s a great resource for me and I’ve really appreciated his guidance and wisdom throughout the three years. I was lucky enough to be a starter at Fresno State. He’s done a really good job in being a mentor.”
Haener said he’s spoken to several teams, including the Raiders.
He is gearing up to be on the field Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Workouts are set to begin at 10 a.m. PST on the NFL Network.
If Haener is selected in the NFL draft in late April in Kansas City, he’ll be the first former Bulldogs quarterback to be drafted since Carr in 2014 when the Raiders selected him in the second round.
“It’s an elite standard,” Haener said. “I think anybody who can comes out of Fresno State ... I think it started with Kevin Sweeney, Trent Dilfer and some of those other guys before us. David Carr. Started a good lineage of good passers and playmakers that come through that Central Valley.
“Davante elevated the standard in the receiver room and I think he’s trying to uphold to that. It’s been great to continue to have high quality talent to come out of the Valley.”
