What’s Davante Adams future with Raiders? Well, he wants to help pick next quarterback

Davante Adams wants to continue to play for the Las Vegas Raiders whether Derek Carr is there or not.

The receiver made that clear during Wednesday’s press conference in Henderson, Nev.

The former Fresno State star cited “pride” as to why he wants to finish out the season, which happens to be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs at Allegiant Stadium, after his former Bulldogs teammate was benched last week.

“I wouldn’t have been here or ended up here originally probably if Derek wasn’t here, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I won’t be here in the event that he’s not here,” Adams said.

“That’s my boy and obviously I got his back. I think I made that more than clear at this point and I support him. Support that everything that he has moving forward as well, but my dream was to play for this before he was a Raider. Obviously, at this point, I obviously want to try to make this thing work and continue on what I’m doing here and myself get better and to see the team grow and get better as well.”

The Raiders acquired Adams in a trade with the Green Bay Packers in March 2022.

It’s been a productive season for Adams, just like his previous seasons with the Packers.

He also established a record in his first season with the Raiders, breaking Tim Brown’s single-season receiving yards record in the 37-34 Week 17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 1.

Adams finished the game with a team-high seven receptions for 153 yards (21.9 avg.) and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard score in the third quarter that is tied for the longest reception by the Raiders this season.

His 1,443 yards broke Brown’s record of 1,408 that stood since 1997.

Raiders quarterback in 2023?

But what’s next for Adams and the rest of the wide receivers and tight ends? Who will be the quarterback in 2023?

Tom Brady is the notable free-agent quarterback who will be available. Others include Jimmy Garoppolo and Lamar Jackson (though it’s possible the Baltimore Ravens will franchise tag him).

Carr is not likely back since the Raiders have to make a quick decision by Feb. 15 or his $40.4 million contract will be guaranteed.

Adams hopes he’s told which direction the team will take.

“We (general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels) all got a really good dynamic and it’s something that I really appreciate,” Adams said. “I’ve mentioned it to them as well. I’m not part of the front office, but obviously they know the reason why I came here and a step like this is obviously something that means a lot to me and my personal career and obviously what I’m trying to chase as far as the ultimate pursuit to get that ring.

“I’m not a guy that is just going to come up here and say anything. They know, whether it’s about the scheme or about personal or what ever it is, there’s a rhyme to the reason. I’m definitely going to have something behind whatever I’m thinking or saying. We obviously got a good understanding of one or another. That helps the whole process.”
