What Derek Carr said after the Raiders signed Hunter Renfrow to an extension

Las Vegas Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler continues to keep the NFL team’s key players in the fold.

The Raiders are planning to sign wide receiver Hunter Renfrow to a two-year extension worth $32 million that includes $21 million guaranteed.

The latest extension means Ziegler has locked up a reliable receiver who’s proven to be a reliable pass catcher who was coined ‘Third-and-Renfrow’ for picking up first downs on any type of third down.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is delighted that he’ll continue to throw to Renfrow.

“We can all try to play tag with him and he’s going to win every time,” Carr said.

“It’s unbelievable how he gets from point A to point B. He may not run the faster 40, but the way he cuts and the way he shifts ... the way he moves, it’s really impressive.”

“I’m just happy for him and his family and the community that he grew up in.”

Renfrow took to Twitter to express his appreciation.

“Words cant express how thankful I am. Thankful to God, Camilla, friends and family, every coach and teammate I have had in the past, and of course Raider Nation. Would not be where I am today without you all and cant wait for the next few years to try and go do something special!,” Renfrow wrote.

Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams said Renfrow is “ahead of his time” with his awareness and football smarts.

“He’s an interesting dude because I’ve been around a lot of people that are like Hunter,” Adams said Thursday. “There’s never been a fourth year with the type of football acumen that he has and his awareness and understanding why he does certain things, because there’s people out there with a lot of talent, but they can’t sit there and break it down and tell you why they’re doing what they did with their footwork or the next rep, why they tweaked it a little bit because of the look that they had.

“Sometimes I’ll be sitting there just talking to him like in the middle of an offensive meeting and we’ll be talking about releases, and he’ll tell me what he thought. And I’m like, this is fun. This is fun being able to be with somebody who’s a lot like me mentally, the way that I approach the game, the way I attack it. I’ve been learning from him. He’s learning from me.”

The Raiders drafted Renfrow in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Clemson and has totaled 208 receptions for 2,299 yards (11.1 avg.) and 15 touchdowns over his first three NFL seasons.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound wide receiver was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2021 after playing in all 17 games with nine starts.

“He earned it and worked for it,” Carr said. “He works extremely hard and happy for his family, his wife and his daughter. That’s life-changing things. He probably didn’t think of when he was a kid and now probably blown away. I’m so happy for him. He deserves every penny. He’s like a lot of people I know: He’s going to do a lot of good things with that money and help a lot of people. Excited for him, and that’s why Davante, Maxx Crosby and myself, that’s why we did our contracts in certain ways so that we can get everybody to stay.”

The Raiders already signed Crosby and Carr to extensions, and now Renfrow. Next up could possibly be tight end Darren Waller.
