Funeral services are set for Raiders great and Clovis High alum Daryle Lamonica in Fresno

Services for Oakland Raiders great Daryle Lamonica will be Thursday at Peoples Church in Fresno.

The services will begin at 11:30 a.m. The church is at 7172 N. Cedar Ave.

Lamonica died April 21 at his Fresno home of natural causes. He was 80.

An icon in the central San Joaquin Valley, Lamonica played at Clovis High. He went on to play quarterback at Notre Dame, graduating in 1963 with a business degree.

The 6-foot-3, 218-pound Lamonica was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and the Buffalo Bills. That was before the NFL merger in 1966.

He signed with the Bills and later starred for the Oakland Raiders.

Announcer Howard Cosell reportedly gave him the nickname “The Mad Bomber” in 1967, a tribute to the quarterback’s penchant for throwing deep passes.

He played 12 seasons in the NFL before retiring.

Lamonica was an “ultimate outdoorsman” who enjoyed fishing and hunting, according to his obituary. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their school events.

Lamonica is survived by his wife, Mary; sister Judy (Lamonica) Nash; his sons and their wives, Brian and Brenda Lamonica and Brandon and Sandra Lamonica; grandchildren Josh, Jeremy, Dakota, Ella, Gavin and Logan; and his great-grandchild Beau.
