Raiders notebook: It was a scolding by Will Compton that made Jon Gruden smile
Will Compton gave it to Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden on Sunday — in a good way.
Gruden was checking on a player on the field when was met by the NFL veteran who signed with the team midway through the season.
“He got on my case for not smiling and not having a good time,” Gruden said Monday. “He’s a weird dude, man. He loves football and that’s why he fits in here.”
Compton helped the Raiders to a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, leading the team in tackles with 12 tackles — 10 of which were solo.
Compton joined the Raiders on Oct. 30 with the team in in need of linebacker help following the loss of Vontaze Burfict due to suspension and numerous injuries.
Compton spent time with the Washington Redskins for five seasons before playing for the Tennessee Titans last season.
He wore the green dot on Sunday, which meant he was communicating with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther.
“Making the adjustments, making the calls, alerts, checking out coverage and individual blitzes and vice versa,” Gruden said. “He’s got a great demeanor about him: very poised, very calm. But he’s really made some plays and made an impact here at a position where we really needed him.”
Injury updates to Josh Jacobs, Trayvon Mullen
Gruden said there is a chance running back Josh Jacobs (shoulder) will play in the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos.
He also said guard Richie Incognito (knee) will be questionable.
Raiders cornerback Trayvon Mullen had to exit the game against the Chargers because of injuries to his head and neck.
Gruden said the good news is that Mullen is OK and could play on Sunday.
Hunter Renfrow’s first 100-yard game
It was a long time coming for wide receiver Hunter Renfrow.
No, not because he’s missed three games because of a rib injury.
Sunday marked his first 100-yard reception game.
He finished with 107 yards on seven receptions, one of which was a short slant from Derek Carr that Renfrow took all the way for a 56-yard touchdown.
Renfrow was told on the sideline that he’d hit the milestone.
“Never in high school, or college — this is my first 100-yard game in my life,” he said. “Usually I had like 96, but I’d never get over the hump. It was good, and it was good because we needed it to win.”
