New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is impressed with Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Never mind how Carr fared against the Patriots in his rookie season in 2014 when he completed 21 of 34 for 174 yards and no touchdowns against one interception in a 16-9 loss.

A lot has changed for the ex-Fresno State star since. Like being selected to two Pro Bowls.

“He can make all the throws. Smart, reads coverages well,” Belichick said. “I’d say he does a tremendous job. The Raiders have great skill players – running backs, tight ends, receivers – and a great offensive line. So there’s a lot of weapons on offense and Carr makes it all go.”

The Raiders (4-5) face the Patriots (7-2) at 1:25 p.m. Sunday at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, whose defense ranks last in the NFL, said it will be a challenge to contain Carr.

“Very efficient quarterback,” he said. “I see a smart, very accurate guy, great arm strength, great command, incredible poise out there on the field.”

Match Carr with the Raiders’ talented, fast receivers, and it’s a major challenge, Patricia said.

“When you think you’ve got a situation where you’ve got good coverage, then all of a sudden they get by you and he can just put the ball downfield and turn something that would be nothing into a huge play.”

Belichick characterized Carr’s ability to make plays while extending plays as “good” and “he’s got good vision.”

“He sees the field well and he’s accurate,” Belichick said. “The guy is a really good player. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.”
