Grizzlies Report for July 14: Fresno 6, New Orleans 2

Thursday recap – Tyler White stayed hot, hitting his seventh home run in 21 games with Fresno, leading the Grizzlies to a 6-2 Pacific Coast League win at New Orleans. White finished with three RBIs. Fresno also received an RBI double in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth from Jon Singleton, his 15th homer of the season but first since June 7. Cesar Valdez (7-1) allowed one run on five hits over seven innings and has won his past five starts.

Up next – LH Tommy Shirley (7-5, 4.88 ERA) faces a Zephyrs pitcher to be announced in Game 2 of the series at 5 p.m. Friday. Shirley was rocked for six earned runs on nine hits and a walk July 8 against Reno. That came after a surge in which Shirley allowed five earned runs in 22 2/3 innings over four starts, all wins. After two more in New Orleans and four in Round Rock, the Grizzlies return to Chukchansi Park on July 22 to launch an eight-game homestand against Albuquerque and Las Vegas.

Roster move – Second baseman Nolan Fontana has been moved to Double-A Corpus Christi to make room for shortstop Alex Bregman, who has returned to the active roster after playing in Sunday’s Futures Game. Fontana was hitting .195 with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 73 games with the Grizzlies.

Streaking – White’s first-inning single gave him hits in 10 straight games, matching Danny Worth for the Grizzlies’ longest streak of the season. Bregman had a fourth-inning single to push his streak to nine, while Teoscar Hernandez has hit in seven straight after a second-inning single.
