Grizzlies Report for July 7: Fresno 14, Reno 0
Everything clicking – Every Fresno Grizzlies batter registered at least one hit and scored at least once while amassing 20 hits and starting pitcher Mike Hauschild tossed eight scoreless innings en route to a 14-0 blowout of the Reno Aces on Thursday before the announced crowd of 5,917 at Chukchansi Park. Alex Bregman, Preston Tucker and Tyler White all homered for the Grizzlies. Tucker batted 4 for 6 with four runs. White went 4 for 4 with three runs. Bregman had a team-high three RBIs. Hauschild tied his career best of eight shutout innings, also achieved last August with the Grizzlies.
Up next – It’ll be left-hander vs. left-hander when the Fresno Grizzlies’ Tommy Shirley (7-4, 4.46 ERA) starts against the Reno Aces’ Edwin Escobar (4-2, 4.91 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Chukchansi Park. Shirley has a 1.99 ERA over his past four starts with 16 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings. Escobar, who made 20 starts for the Grizzlies in 2014, has been inconsistent. He allowed one run in six innings in his last start but gave up 12 earned runs in his previous two starts combined over 8 1/3 innings.
Reno power – Aces outfielders Kyle Jensen and Peter O’Brien are tied for second in the Pacific Coast League with 17 home runs each behind El Paso’s Hunter Renfroe, who has 20. O’Brien has played in a mere 52 games, far behind Jensen (81) and Renfroe (83). O’Brien had 26 home runs in 2015, 34 in 2014 and 22 in 2013. The Grizzlies have hit 83 homers and the Aces 80 to rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the PCL.
Prospect watch – Since joining the Fresno Grizzlies and playing in Triple A for the first time, Houston Astros prospect Alex Bregman has registered a hit in all eight games. Bregman, the No. 2 overall pick in 2015, is batting .389 (14 for 36) with five homers and 14 RBIs.
