Grizzlies Report for May 9: El Paso 8, Fresno 6
Monday recap – Diego Goris delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on the play after an error by left fielder Matt Duffy as El Paso topped Fresno 8-6. The Grizzlies had tied the score 5-5 in the top of the eighth on Eury Perez’s two-run single. Fresno got a two-out home run from Danny Worth in the ninth, but El Paso reliever Frank Garces got A.J. Reed on a grounder to first to end it.
Up next – The Grizzlies return home for a four-game series at Chukchansi Park against the Tacoma Rainiers, who will send former Dos Palos High School RH Cody Martin (4-2, 6.75) to the mound against Fresno RH Brady Rodgers (1-2, 3.60) in the opener at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. Martin was a seventh-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the 2011 first-year player draft out of Gonzaga. He made the Braves’ Opening Day roster in 2015 but was optioned to Triple A on May 19. Martin was traded to the Oakland organization, then was claimed by Seattle after the season.
Grizzlies pitcher honored – Rodgers was named the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Week for May 2-8 after firing a four-hitter during Fresno’s 2-0 win over Reno on May 4. Rodgers struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter while pitching the first nine-inning shutout in the PCL since Aug. 17, 2015.
