Grizzlies report for April 13: Fresno 6, Salt Lake 0
Proving his Worth: Fresno newcomer Danny Worth, who signed a minor league deal with major league parent club Houston in the offseason, hit a fourth-inning grand slam as the Grizzlies defeated Salt Lake 6-0 on Wednesday at Smith’s Ballpark. Worth, 30, who never has hit more than eight home runs in any of his 10 minor league seasons, leads the Grizzlies with two home runs and six RBIs through the first five games of the 2016 Pacific Coast League season.
Another delay: First pitch, scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PDT, was delayed about two hours because of heavy rain. The Grizzlies, just a week into the new season, already have had two games postponed because of inclement weather.
A clean return: Grizzlies LH Tommy Shirley, coming off a knee injury, played for the first time since May 29, 2015. He threw five scoreless innings, scattering three hits and one walk, and finished with four strikeouts.
Up next: RH Michael Feliz will make his season debut with the Grizzlies in Thursday’s series finale after beginning the season with Houston. The 22-year-old was optioned to Triple-A after allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks in his one outing with the Astros. The Bees’ starting pitcher had not been named. First pitch is again scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
MVP back with Grizzlies: Matt Duffy, the reigning PCL MVP, rejoined Fresno on Wednesday after also beginning the season with the Astros. Duffy, 27, started at third base and hit cleanup. His return bumped Colin Moran from the lineup.
Rewind: Hitting just 1 of 9 with runners in scoring position, the Grizzlies stranded 11 base runners and lost 2-1 to the Bees on Tuesday. Sluggers A.J Reed and Jon Singleton went a combined 0 for 9. Fresno leadoff hitter Tony Kemp finished 3 for 4, and Eury Perez and Moran each were 2 for 4.
