Grizzlies Report for Aug. 29: Omaha 9, Fresno 5
Grizzlies on Saturday: The Omaha Storm Chasers got right after Fresno starter Dan Straily, who faced six batters before recording an out during the Grizzlies’ 9-5 loss in Omaha. Alex Gordon drew a lead-off walk that sparked a rally of five straight singles for an early five-run advantage. Straily eventually got out of the inning, retiring the final three batters of the order. The second inning was more of the same for the Grizzlies, as Gordon walked again, only to score on Cheslor Cuthbert’s two-run double. Fresno received solo homers from four players – Matt Duffy, Tyler Heineman, Jonathan Villar and Jon Singleton – but it wasn’t enough to catch up with the Storm Chasers. Straily was tagged for 11 hits and nine runs (all earned) in 3 1/3 innings as the Grizzlies dropped their fourth game in a row. Trent Woodward, who joined Triple-A Fresno from Class-A Quad Cities on Saturday, was 1 for 2 with a single and a ground out in his Grizzlies debut.
Grizzlies on Sunday: RH Asher Wojciechowski (8-3, 5.11 ERA) leads Fresno into its final road game of the regular season at 12:05 p.m. in Omaha. The Storm Chasers have not announced a starter as they go for the series sweep.
Roster moves: Woodward, who played one season for Fresno State as a redshirt junior before being drafted by the Astros in 2014, was called up to Triple-A Fresno as a replacement for Max Stassi. Stassi was promoted to parent-club Houston after Jason Castro was placed on the DL with a strained right quad. Woodward hit .294 in 31 games for Class-A Quad Cities this season and is the first ex-Bulldog to play for the Grizzlies since Tom Goodwin in 2002.
