Thursday recap: Alex Gordon, a Kansas City Royals star on injury rehab for a groin strain, had an RBI single in a four-run second and finished 3 for 5 atop Omaha’s lineup as the Storm Chasers beat visiting Fresno 5-1. Grizzlies starter Mike Hauschild (6-4) turned in a clunker to close what was an otherwise stellar August. Hauschild entered 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA this month but allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. Five Omaha pitchers combined to walk five but checked Fresno on six hits.
Grizzlies on Friday: Fresno LH Luis Cruz (6-5, 4.64 ERA) gets the start for Game 2 of the series at Omaha, a visit that wraps up the road portion of the Grizzlies’ regular season. A rough 2-6 stretch away from Chukchansi Park in late July hurt, but Fresno is 36-32 overall on the road. Only two Pacific Coast League teams had more road wins entering Thursday than the Pacific Northern champs. The Storm Chasers, who began the series with an elimination number of seven in a PCL American North led by Oklahoma City, were to send LH Chris Dwyer (2-2, 4.04) to the hill for the 5:05 p.m. PDT start at Werner Park.
Stat of the day: 4 – walks by Grizzlies LH Brett Oberholtzer in his past five starts, none in Wednesday’s tough-luck 3-2 loss at Iowa. He is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in those five games.
