Wednesday recap: Iowa prospect Javier Baez drove in two runs and Carlos Pimentel (12-5, 2.92 ERA), who is the PCL ERA leader among active players in the league, scattered three hits and four walks while allowing one run as the Cubs downed the Grizzlies 3-2 and took 3 of 4 in the teams’ lone series. Grizzlies starter Brett Oberholtzer struck out seven in six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. Fresno did not have an extra-base hit.
Grizzlies on Thursday: Fresno RH Mike Hauschild (6-3, 3.42 ERA) takes the mound to start the team’s final road series of the regular season and the only meetings this season with the Omaha Storm Chasers. First pitch is 5:05 p.m. If Hauschild had enough Triple-A innings to qualify, he would have the third-best ERA in the Pacific Coast League. But he logged the first 50.2 of his 121.2 total innings in Double-A. For the year, Hauschild is 11-4 with a 3.33 ERA. He will face Storm Chasers RH Casey Coleman (4-3, 4.68).
Stat of the day: 4 – Major offensive categories in which the Grizzlies lead the PCL and it could be five by season’s end. Entering Wednesday, the Grizzlies topped the league with 751 runs, 708 RBIs, 547 walks and a .360 on-base percentage. Fresno was second with 145 steals, trailing Tacoma by one. Pitching-wise, the only category (other than wins) where the Grizzlies lead is a dubious one – most hit batsmen (58).
