Grizzlies Report for July 19: El Paso takes two from Fresno
Grizzlies on Monday: Left-hander Brett Oberholtzer (2-2, 5.30) takes the mound against right-hander Luis Cessa (0-1, 6.10) as Fresno opens an 11-game, 12-day road trip at Las Vegas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Cashman Field. Oberholtzer will be making his second start with Fresno since getting sent down from the parent Houston Astros, where he was 2-2 with a 4.46 ERA in eight starts.
Sunday recap: Domingo Santana lined a sharp single to right-center field in the bottom of the first inning to extend his on-base streak to a Grizzlies’ record 43 games for Fresno’s highlight during a 7-1, seven-inning loss to El Paso in the first game of a doubleheader. It’s the longest streak in minor league baseball this season. Santana surpassed Edgar Gonzalez, who reached base safely in 42 straight games for Fresno between May 25 and July 7 of 2012. Grizzlies pitcher Mark Appel, the first overall selection of the 2013 first-year player draft, was rocked for five runs (four earned) on five hits (two home runs) and two walks over four innings during his first start in Fresno. In the second game, Tommy Medica hit a fifth-inning grand slam, his second home run of the doubleheader, to power the Chihuahuas to a 7-1 win. Medica was 4 of 8 with seven RBIs overall. Fresno’s Santana, meanwhile, saw his on-base streak end after going 0 for 3. Santana flied out to center in the second, lined out to right in the fourth and took a called third strike in the seventh.
Stat of the day: 68, the consecutive number of days the Grizzlies have spent leading the PCL’s Pacific Northern Division, dating back to May 12.
