Grizzlies Report for July 17: Fresno 8, El Paso 2

Friday recap: Dan Straily turned in his team-high seventh quality start as the Grizzlies beat El Paso 8-2 for their fifth win in a row, matching their season-high from April 13-17. Aside from two solo homers, the Chihuahuas gave Straily little trouble as he allowed seven hits and fanned nine in seven innings to improve to 7-6 in 15 starts and lower his ERA from 4.06 to 3.93. Relievers Jake Buchanan and Jason Stoffel each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the win. Domingo Santana extended his on-base streak to 42 games (matching Scott McClain’s franchise record set in 2008) with a solo homer in the seventh and added an RBI double in the eighth.

Grizzlies on Saturday: LH Brett Oberholtzer (2-2, 5.30) makes his return to Triple-A Fresno after a spot start with the Astros against Cleveland on July 9 (Houston lost 3-1). Oberholtzer will face El Paso RH Daniel McCutchen (4-5, 4.52) at 7:05 p.m. at Chukchansi Park. McCutchen, 32, pitched six scoreless innings (four hits, one walk and five strikeouts) in his most recent start to lead the Chihuahuas to a 4-0 win and the team’s first shutout of the season. The first 1,500 fans inside the stadium will receive a free Nolan Ryan replica jersey. Stat of the day: 102 — number of RBIs that Grizzlies third baseman Matt Duffy is on pace to finish with at the end of the season, four shy of the franchise record set by Scott McClain (108) in 2008. Through 82 games this season, Duffy has 68 RBIs (surpassing Jon Singleton’s team-leading total of 66 before his promotion to parent-club Houston) for third most in the Pacific Coast League. Duffy, who was named the Astros’ Triple-A Hitter of the Month in June, is hitting .291 with 17 doubles, one triple and 11 homers.
