Grizzlies Report for July 16: Fresno 10, El Paso 9

Thursday recap: Back-to-back home runs by Matt Duffy — who wheeled around the bases and across home standing up for an inside-the-parker — and Domingo Santana in the fifth inning extended a one-run Grizzlies lead to three runs and Fresno held on for a 10-9 victory against El Paso in front of 6,232 fans at Chukchansi Park. Fresno LH Kevin Chapman gave up two runs in the top of the ninth but silenced the Chihuahuas with a game-ending strikeout as the Grizzlies pushed their Pacific-Northern Division lead to 10 games, with second-place Tacoma losing to last-place Sacramento.

Grizzlies on Friday: Fresno RH Dan Straily (6-6, 4.06) will oppose Chihuahuas RH Chris Smith (1-4, 3.82) when the series continues at 7:05 p.m. at Chukchansi Park. After Thursday’s win, the Grizzlies are 13-4 against El Paso as the teams wrap up their final series of the season. The series also marks the first of two against teams from the Pacific South Division as the Grizzlies next travel to Las Vegas for another four-game set to open a season-long 11-game trip.

Santana watch: Grizzlies outfielder Domingo Santana is one game away from matching Fresno’s longest on-base streak since Edgar Gonzalez got on base in 42 straight in the 2011 season. Santana reached for the 41st game in a row Thursday on a second-inning single.

Stat of the day: 84 of 97 — the number of days the Fresno Grizzlies (53-38) have spent in first place in the Pacific South Division, including 65 in a row since May 12.
