Grizzlies Report for July 9: Sacramento 5, Fresno 4
Thursday recap: Kevin Frandsen, a former Grizzlies infielder, hit a two-out walk-off double in the 13th as Sacramento outlasted Fresno 5-4 at Raley Field. Frandsen, 33, a 12th-round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2004, came on in the seventh after Adam Duvall was ejected for arguing a call while playing defense at first base. That play, L. J. Hoes’ RBI single and a bases-loaded hit batsman helped the Grizzlies take a 4-3 lead, but Carlos Triunfel hit a leadoff triple in the seventh and scored on Ronny Cedeno’s one-out sacrifice fly. Fresno starter Asher Wojciechowski allowed Duvall’s three-run homer in the first but went on to allow just those three runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out seven without a walk.
Grizzlies on Friday: Fresno’s final series ahead of the Triple-A All-Star break continues with game 3 of the five-game set at 7:05p.m. in Sacramento. The Grizzlies turned to LH Luis Cruz (4-4, 4.87 ERA), while the River Cats were due to send LH Nik Turley (3-3, 6.21 ERA) to the mound. It’s feast or famine for Turley, who has pitched two-run or better ball over six innings in five starts (one of those for Single-A San Jose), but allowed five or more runs in his other four. One of the good ones came when he checked the Grizzlies on two hits in six scoreless innings on June 24 at Chukchansi Park.
A year later: Fresno long ago had clinched a winning record at this year’s break, compared to a year ago when they were 47-51 and 91/2 back of Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific North Division. The River Cats had 56 wins at that point, but are still looking to break 40 this season in their first year as a San Francisco affiliate after the Giants pulled out of Fresno following the 2014 campaign.
Stat of the day: 87 — games for Grizzlies to reach 50 victories, third-fastest behind the 1998 (77 games) and 2010 teams (84 games) in franchise history.
