Grizzlies Report for July 1: Fresno 5, El Paso 1
Wednesday recap: Grizzlies RH Mike Hauschild tied his career high with 10 strikeouts, including nine through the first four innings, in Fresno’s 5-1 victory against the Chihuahuas. Hauschild (2-1, 2.45) allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks in six innings. The Grizzlies scored three in the first — Alex Presley, Hoes and Robbie Grossman had RBIs. Matt Duffy added a two-run homer in the eighth.
Grizzlies on Thursday: Fresno, boasting a pair of newly minted Pacific Coast League All-Stars in reliever Tyson Perez (Hanford High/Fresno City College) and outfielder L.J. Hoes, continues its series at El Paso. Fresno RH Mark Appel makes his second career Triple-A start after the highly regarded prospect gave up seven runs in three innings in his weekend debut at Reno. El Paso counters with LH Robbie Erlin (5-5, 5.96 ERA) at 6:05 p.m.
Straily promoted: Grizzlies RH starter Dan Straily was recalled by the parent Houston Astros with the demotion of LH Brett Oberholtzer. OF Jake Marisnick joined Fresno on a major league rehab assignment. Straily, 26, 6-6 with a 4.06 ERA and 70 strikeouts to 14 walks in 77.2 innings but since mid-May was the Grizzlies’ top pitcher — going 4-3 with a 3.35 ERA in his past past eight starts. In his past three starts, Straily was 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and 17 strikeouts to three walks in 19 innings. Oberholtzer has split time with the Grizzlies and Astros this season because of a blister injury.
Star-worthy: Perez, 25, in his first Triple-A season, is 1-2 with a 2.76 ERA, five saves and 20 strikeouts in 24 games. Hoes, elected in fan voting, entered Wednesday batting a PCL fourth-best .338. The Grizzlies likely lost two more selections with the June call-ups of first baseman Jon Singleton and OF Domingo Santana by major league parent club Houston.
