Grizzlies Report for June 23: Fresno 6, Sacramento 2

Tuesday recap: Cleanup hitter Jon Singleton ended a homerless streak of 98 at-bats with a solo shot to right-center field and Tony Kemp and Matt Duffy each had two RBIs as the Grizzlies topped the River Cats 6-2 on Tuesday night before a lively announced crowd of 6,031 at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies have won three of the first four meetings in the Highway 99 rivalry series this season. Singleton tied Sacramento’s Adam Duvall for the Pacific Coast League’s home run lead at 15. The River Cats had built a 2-0 lead after Darren Ford hit a solo homer to start the game and Travis Ishikawa added a solo shot in the second. Grizzlies starting pitcher Luis Cruz (4-2, 4.06) got the win, striking out six and scattering four hits for two runs in seven innings.

Grizzlies on Wednesday: The Fresno Grizzlies and Sacramento River Cats continue their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Grizzlies RH Jake Buchanan (3-1, 4.75 ERA), who pitched in five games with the parent Houston Astros, gets the start against River Cats LH Nik Turley (1-2, 8.34). Buchanan gave up three runs off seven hits in four innings in relief during his previous outing. While Buchanan was in the majors, he sported a 2.00 ERA with five strikeouts in nine innings. Turley has allowed 14 runs in his past three outings spanning 12 2/3 innings. The game also features the Pacific Coast League’s two worst teams at throwing out runners. The Grizzlies ranked last, throwing out 11 in 56 attempts (.196 efficiency). The River Cats were second-to-last, throwing out 21 in 100 tries (.210). The Tacoma Rainiers lead the league with a .406 efficiency.

Stat of the day: The River Cats, which entered Tuesday last in the PCL with a .972 defensive efficiency, committed three errors Tuesday. The top mark was .984 by the New Orleans Zephyrs.
