Grizzlies Report for May 28: Fresno 5, Memphis 4 (video)

Grizzlies on Friday: Fresno hits the road for eight games, beginning with the first of four against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at 5:05 p.m. Oklahoma City was the Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate the past four seasons before joining forces with the Dodgers. Grizzlies LH Tommy Shirley (3-1, 3.60 ERA) was set to face RH Zach Lee (5-3, 2.52). A 2010 first-round pick, Lee had the sixth-best ERA in the Pacific Coast League and was in the top 10 in strikeouts (42) entering Thursday’s games.

Thursday rewind: The Grizzlies connected on three straight singles in the bottom of the 11th, including No. 9 hitter Joe Sclafani’s walk-off hit against Memphis fireballing reliever Sam Tuivailala, to pick up a 5-4 win before an announced crowd of 3,467 at Chukchansi Park. Tuivailala, pitching for the second straight day, was a Fresno State signee a few years back who skipped college to sign professionally. The Grizzlies’ No. 7-9 hitters, a group that also included center fielder Alex Pressley and catcher Tyler Heineman, combined to go 8 for 14 with three runs and three RBIs. The Grizzlies (27-20) finished the homestand at 5-3 and have a five-game lead over Reno in the PCL’s Pacific Northern Division.

Stat of the day: Five — wins for Grizzlies right-hander Richard Rodriguez, who despite being a reliever was tied for second in the PCL. He pitched scoreless 10th and 11th innings to lower his ERA to 2.10.
