Fresno Grizzlies

Grizzlies Report for May 27 (video)

Grizzlies on Thursday: With no indication from the Houston Astros as to when they plan to call up top prospect Carlos Correa, there’s a possibility that this could be the final time he plays in Fresno. The Grizzlies close out a four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds at 12:05 p.m. before hitting the road for the next eight games. Correa, 20, has cooled off some of late and gone hitless in three of his past four games. But many of his outs have been hard hit balls caught by the defense. Correa is hitting .270 with three home runs, 14 runs and eight RBIs in 16 games at Triple-A. He also committed his first error with the Grizzlies on Wednesday. The Grizzlies, who have been using a six-man rotation, will send Brady Rodgers (2-3, 5.63 ERA) to the mound against Redbirds LH John Gast (1-3, 4.99). Rodgers has 32 strikeouts to 11 walks on the season.

Wednesday recap: The Grizzlies allowed three unearned runs because of four errors, three from third baseman Matt Duffy, en route to a 6-1 loss to the Redbirds during an afternoon game before an announced crowd of 4,701 at Chukchansi Park. Grizzlies starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer, who was making a rehab start, gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits in 42/3 innings. He struck out five. First baseman Jon Singleton received the day off. Outfielder Domingo Santana did not play because of hand soreness. Correa went 0 for 3. Catcher Max Stassi provided the Grizzlies’ run with a solo homer in the eighth, his fifth of the year. Memphis’ Stephen Piscotty and Xavier Scruggs each homered off Oberholtzer.

Stat of the day: Duffy’s troublesome day defensively partly could’ve been attributed to the quick turnaround for both teams. After concluding Tuesday’s game around 9:30 p.m., the Grizzlies had to be at the ballpark by 8 the next morning. In addition, Duffy hadn’t received much playing time at third base with Wednesday marking only his second time at the hot corner since May 19. He’s started 16 times at third base out of his 36 games for the season.
