Grizzlies Report for May 22: Nashville 7, Fresno 2
Grizzlies on Saturday: Fresno LH Tommy Shirley makes his first back-to-back starts in nearly a month after flip-flopping between the rotation and bullpen as a four-game series continues with Nashville. Shirley struck out eight in his previous outing but made it through just 4.2 innings. LH Brad Mills (1-5, 4.62) is scheduled to start for the Sounds, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
Friday rewind: Oakland A’s rehabbing super-utlityman man Ben Zobrist (knee) drove in a pair of runs and scored twice while going 2 for 3 at the plate as Nashville evened the series with a 7-2 win. Zobrist played left field and was to serve as the designated hitter Saturday and play second base on Sunday. He already had played a pair of games for Class-A Stockton and is pointed toward a Monday return to the majors. Sounds RH Zach Neal continued his string of wild swings on the mound, showing his good side on this night by limiting the Grizzlies to two runs (one earned) on a hit and three walks in 5.2 innings. He has a 1.69 ERA in two Triple-A starts this season but is 3-3 with a 6.44 ERA in seven games while bouncing down to Double-A Midland. Grizzlies shortstop Carlos Correa did nothing to stall his bid for a call-up to the parent Houston Astros, going 0 for 1 but with three walks and a pair of steals. Jon Singleton was 1 for 4 but drove in a run, giving the Grizzlies slugger 35 RBIs in May and a still-Pacific Coast League-leading 45 on the year.
Stat of the day: The Grizzlies entered Friday night’s as the Triple-A leader with 51 homers. Las Vegas was next with 44 but closed the gap by homering once in a 6-3 loss to visiting Oklahoma City.
