Back-to-back kickoff return for TD’s highlights game between Clovis East and Central
Clovis East football coach Brandon Nagle had an anxious moment late in the fourth quarter when Central was driving down the field with hopes of sending the game to overtime.
All Nagle hoped for was a big stop on fourth down.
His top-ranked Timberwolves delivered when the fourth-ranked Grizzlies attempted a wildcat play from the 9-yard line and Clovis East stopped them short in a 34-26 victory in a Tri-River Athletic Conference game at Lamonica Stadium on Thursday night.
“I’m proud that we finished,” Nagle said. “We didn’t play our perfect game, but we found a way to finish. Central is coached well and we had to fight for everything.”
The game got started in the most exciting way — twice.
The game opened with Harold Duvall racing to the end zone on a 70-yard kickoff return for a quick lead.
Central had the same idea.
Xavior Jones returned a kickoff that went 68 yards, but the extra point was missed as the Grizzlies trailed 7-6 early in the first quarter.
Clovis East built a 21-6 halftime lead and never looked back.
The Timberwolves’ Tyus Miller eluded defenders and fired off a pass to Taemell Horton for a 23-yard touchdown.
Miller finished the game with two touchdowns and running back Lindsey Graves had two touchdowns.
Brandon Smith led the way for Central with 21 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
