High school football rewind: Comeback win for one team and big-time performances in Week 2
Week 2 of the high school football season came to a close on Friday with big-time performances from many players in the Fresno area.
But it was Fowler who had a comeback win to cap the Week 2 games.
The Redcats were down 14-0 against Firebaugh before scoring a touchdown before halftime.
Fowler coach David Muro said Jerod Smith put his team “on his back” and threw a touchdown to tie the game.
Matthew Luna scored a rushing touchdown with 1:27 remaining for the go-ahead score.
Firebaugh then scored a touchdown with seven seconds remaining and went for two points to win the game but Fowler’s defense made a stop to seal the 21-20 victory.
Bullard, meanwhile, made quick work on Buhach Colony after a 70-3 victory.
The Knights were led by Tyler Franklin’s six touchdown performance.
Speaking of six touchdown games. Central’s Jelani Dippel passed for six touchdowns in a 49-21 victory over Bettye Davis East Anchorage.
Daylon Scott had three receiving touchdowns for the Grizzlies.
Sunnyside’s Tanner Wilson finished with five touchdowns passes in the Wildcats’ 48-0 victory over Reedley.
Malachi Barnes had 123 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
A big game for Jordan Crisp of Tulare Union who finished with 254 yards and three touchdowns, including two touchdown runs in the Tribe’s 49-15 victory over El Diamante.
San Joaquin Memorial was led by David Bell’s two touchdowns in an 18-14 victory over Christian Brothers-Sacramento.
It was a big night for Golden West, who blitzed past Dinuba 63-8.
Trailblazers QB Jayden Najera passed for five touchdowns and running back Case Anders had 10 carries for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
Najera’s five touchdowns were split except to Isaac Elias who finished the game with two touchdowns.
Davian Stephenson of Chowchilla was all over the field because he had two interceptions and forced a fumble. He was effective on the ground with 77 yards and a touchdown in a 41-21 victory over Dos Palos.
Julian Silva was a ball hawk on defense for Mendota as he had three interceptions in the Aztecs’ 27-21 victory over Liberty-Madera Ranchos.
David Gonzalez had two rushing touchdowns for Mendota.
On Thursday, Cade Larsen had 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a 34-20 victory for Minarets over Mariposa County.
