Clovis, Sierra Pacific girls basketball teams roll into regional finals
Clovis High is aiming for a sweep of Northern California Division II girls winter championships after the basketball team won Saturday night.
There’s something lucky about the number two for the Cougars.
Hours after the second-seeded Clovis soccer team won the title, the No. 2 Clovis girls basketball team beat No. 3 Del Oro-Loomis 70-63 in a semifinal.
That sends Clovis (24-9) into the regional final Tuesday at 7 p.m. at top-seeded Oakland Tech, which beat No. 5 San Joaquin Memorial 68-64.
One other Fresno-area team advanced to the regional finals with a win Saturday night: Sierra Pacific, the 11th seed in NorCal D-IV, blasted No. 2 Argonaut-Jackson 62-42. The Golden Bears (28-7), whose pedigree includes the 2018 state D-V crown, next play at No. 1 Colfax.
Three other Fresno-area teams were eliminated in Saturday’s NorCal semifinals including the Clovis West girls, beaten 53-47 by No. 2 St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda in the Open Division. The Golden Eagles (27-5) had been off since beating Clovis North last Saturday for the program’s eighth straight Central Section crown.
Clovis North (24-9) saw its season end in a 67-50 Division I loss at No. 2 Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland.
And the young Hoover boys (24-10), seeded fourth in Division IV after a section runner-up finish, lost to No. 8 Brookside Christian-Stockton 52-48.
