‘I knew at halftime it was now or never,’ hero says. Her goals power Clovis to regional title

Samantha Tristan knew it was time to do something.

The Clovis High junior scored two goals in a span of 90 seconds early in the second half Saturday at Lamonica Stadium, giving the second-seeded Cougars a 2-0 victory over No. 8 Leigh-San Jose and the school’s first CIF girls soccer title, in Northen California Division II.

“I knew at halftime it was now or never,” Tristan said, “I just had to do something. I saw the goalie out and I said, ‘Why not?’”

Her second goal went from 35 yards.

The Cougars took a tough loss to Clovis North 1-0 in overtime for the Central Section Division I championship.

But Clovis rebounded in the regionals by defeating No. 7 Folsom 4-0 and No. 6 Maria Carrillo-Santa Rosa in penalty kicks.

“These girls battled all year,” coach Ian Lynch said. “These girls have shown composure and talent all season. We played a good brand of soccer today and it’s amazing to be here.”
