Prep football Week 5 roundup: Madera South ends Liberty’s state-best win streak
Liberty High-Madera Ranchos’ 22-game winning streak, what had been the longest run in the state, came to an end Friday night.
Madera South scored three unanswered touchdowns and held Liberty scoreless during the second and third quarters to lock up a 41-21 nonleague victory.
Both teams are 4-1.
No. 10 Buchanan 45, Porterville 12
Nolan LeForge connected with Mitch Souza for three touchdowns to lead the Bears (3-2) over the Panthers (1-4).
The duo struck for scores covering 38, 18 and 13 yards.
Trevor Irvin also scored on a 36-yard run for Buchanan, which scored the game’s first 45 points.
No. 14 Lemoore 42, Hanford West 0
Logan Ahlin completed 9 of 12 passes for 242 yards and three long touchdowns to power the Tigers (4-2, 2-0) over the Huskies (1-5, 0-2) in the West Yosemite League.
Ahlin, in his second game back after missing 2 1/2 with a concussion suffered Sept. 4 against Clovis, connected with Allen Perryman for scores of 58 and 24 yards and with Reggie Davis for a 71-yard strike.
The Tigers also received 160 yards rushing, including a pair of 41-yard touchdown runs, from Trey Perryman, who has missed time with an ankle injury.
Roger Wilson’s 55-yard punt return for a touchdown triggered a running clock for Lemoore, ranked second in Division II by The Bee, late in the third quarter.
No. 13 Hanford 42, El Diamante 14
Hanford (6-0, 2-0) had no problems staying undefeated as Ryan Johnson passed for five touchdowns and ran in another as the Bullpups blew out the Miners (2-4, 0-2) in a West Yosemite League game.
With the score tied 7-7 in the first, Hanford rattled off 28 straight touchdowns to pull away.
No. 15 Sanger 34, Reedley 7
This was the 102nd game of the series, according to Sanger historian Ron Blackwood – the Apaches leading 67-33-2, including eight straight wins – and the rivalry was stoked hours before kickoff.
All was clean at the stadium Thursday night, when Sanger’s freshmen remained unbeaten with a 36-6 win over the Pirates.
But the venue was struck with vandalism overnight.
Officials from Reedley – whose school colors are green, black and white – arrived at the stadium Friday morning to find that the school’s midfield skull logo had been painted red, which happens to be Sanger’s school color.
In addition, the long and triple jump runways near the scoreboard to the venue’s north, had red-painted arrowheads – the Apaches’ logo.
The paintwork was removed before Friday night’s junior varsity and varsity games.
The Apaches’ Isaiah Hilliard rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns.
No. 17 Memorial 41, Hoover 21
Joey Ruiz rushed for 192 yards and five touchdowns, and Michael Alvarez passed for 246 yards and a score as the Panthers (5-0) surged late after trailing 14-7 to the Patriots (0-5) at halftime.
Memorial, pointing to a County/Metro Athletic Conference showdown at home with No. 2 Bullard (4-1) next Friday, had receivers Chris Paz (seven receptions, 87 yards, one TD) and Gabriel Gavia (6-53) complement Alvarez in the passing game.
Alvarez, a junior, completed 25 of 35 attempts.
Hoover junior Jose Medina passed for 154 yards and two TDs and carried 10 times for 66 yards.
Fresno 26, Atwater 21
The Warriors defense delivered a game-ending goal-line stand, deflecting a last-ditch pass in the end zone to spoil homecoming night for the Falcons.
John L’heureux’s 42-yard touchdown run off a fumble return had put Fresno (4-1) ahead 26-14 in the third quarter and the Warriors had a chance to ice it on a drive that stretched into the final period.
Atwater, with a 1-4 record that includes a 28-0 loss to section top-ranked Clovis, came up with a stop at the 1, then drove the length of the field to pull within five with 3:53 remaining on backup quarterback Nathaniel Gilmore’s 14-yard scoring pass to Javier Valencia.
The Falcons were down to their third quarterback by game’s end. Gilmore was filling in for starter Frank Cocio, then Gilmore himself was knocked from the game, leaving third-stringer Juan Bautista in charge of the final drive that fell short.
Bautista delivered a 40-yard completion on a fourth-and-15 to keep the drive going, but misfired on his final pass to Anthony Hayhurst as time expired.
Fresno’s Khory Day (8 of 12 for 143, three TDs) threw three balls up for grabs in the first half, and each time his receiver went up and got it, with Lee Major (four catches for 100 yards) hauling in a pair of touchdown grabs and Adrian Mendoza adding a third.
The Warriors launched their first 3-0 start in 39 years before losing 61-40 to Madera South a week ago.
Kerman 21, Dos Palos 14
Quarterback Sean Chambers broke lose for a 48-yard touchdown run with roughly 6 minutes remaining as the Lions (2-2) pulled out a 21-14 win against the Broncos (1-4).
Chambers finished with 137 rushing yards and threw for two touchdowns.
Dos Palos’ Alex Flores had touchdown runs from 5 and 2 yards.
Selma 39, Tulare Western 0
The Bears logged back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1997, blanking the Mustangs a week after defeating Roosevelt 62-0.
Henry Ramirez Jr. completed 11 of 15 passes 178 yards and three touchdowns and Jordan Dominguez scored two touchdowns, via a 2-yard run and a fumble return.
Selma (5-1) has won five straight. The Mustangs fell to 2-3.
Fresno Christian 34, Trinity Christian-Monterey 28 (OT)
Tyler Villines caught the game-winner after sending it into overtime with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass and 2-point conversion catch as the Eagles beat the Warriors.
Slate Wade reeled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Villines on a third-down play in the fourth quarter. Tyler Breedlove then connected with Villines for the tying conversion.
It was Breedlove to Villines again for the winner, this time a 14-yarder as the Eagles (4-2) prevailed in the intersection matchup.
Villines accounted for three touchdowns, also scoring once on the ground.
Fresno Christian’s Daniel Ayers amassed 18 tackles and scored on a first-quarter fumble recovery.
Central Valley Christian 29, Fowler 13
Kolin Stock ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries as the Cavaliers thumped the D-V No. 2 Redcats in nonleague action.
CVC (4-1) had two players rush for 100-plus yards with Connor Paden gaining 100 yards on 11 carries.
Fowler (2-2) quarterback Matt Kahaian threw for 250 yards and added a 41-yard touchdown run.
Exeter 38, Wasco 7
Alec Trujillo passed for 310 yards and five touchdowns to carry the Monarchs (5-1) over the Tigers (2-3).
Trujillo connected three times with Julian Andalon, with strikes covering 77, 17 and 72 yards. Trujillo also threw a 3-yard touchdown to Trystin Johnston and a 16-yarder to Andrew Garcia while completing 14 of his 23 passes.
Andalon finished with 166 yards receiving on three catches.
Washington 35, Sierra 6
Quarterback Ashanti Ross and receiver Carlos Silva were in sync the whole night as the duo connected three times for touchdowns as the Panthers trounced the Chieftains in North Sequoia League play.
Ross aired out touchdown strikes of 10, 17 and 44 yards to Silva as Washington (3-2, 1-0) scored 35 straight points before Sierra (1-4, 0-1) found the scoreboard.
Ross finished 12 of 19 for 229 passing yards. Silva made eight catches for 162 yards.
Caruthers 42, Farmersville 14
Alex Puga ran for a school-record 347 yards, rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another and the Blue Raiders topped 500 yards overall on the ground in a victory that kept the Aztecs winless through five games.
Puga, a 5-8, 155-pound junior who has 752 yards on the season for Caruthers (2-3), answered the first of Farmersville’s scores with the last and longest of his touchdown runs – a 28-yarder in the third quarter to make it 28-7. The Blue Raiders passed just four times and completed only one, but that was an 11-yard TD from Puga to senior Cristian Perez.
Aztecs sophomore Victor Castrejon’s 72-yard kick return had pulled the visitors within 21-7 at halftime and he accounted for the final score on a 14-yard reception of a pass from junior J.J. Galaviz.
Immanuel 53, Orosi 0
Kyle Dunigan, Jonathan Gurrola and Adrian Jump all scored two touchdowns as the Eagles (6-0) rolled past the Cardinals (1-4).

Immanuel, top-ranked in D-V, also received 2-yard scoring runs from Ryan Case and Cody King.
Sierra Pacific 28, Yosemite 12
Deareon Willis scored on a 38-yard reception and a 5-yard run as the Golden Bears (4-1) jumped out to a big lead before holding off the Badgers (0-4).
Sierra Pacific also received an 88-yard touchdown reception from Skylor Horn and a 20-yard scoring run from Hayden Costa.
Mendota 21, Roosevelt 7
Junior Cardenas passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns to lead the D-V No. 3 Aztecs (3-2) past the Rough Riders (1-4) on Thursday.
Cardenas’ first scoring strike, a 20-yarder to Julian Cardenas, capped a 14-point second quarter that proved to be all Mendota would need. His second touchdown pass, a 26-yarder to Alfredo Ramirez in the third quarter, helped put the score out of reach.
Marquez Navarro scored the first points for the Aztecs on a 61-yard run.
Leo Leal helped Roosevelt cut the gap to 14-7 in the third quarter with a 32-yard run, but that’s as close as the Rough Riders would get.
