No. 5 Clovis West dominates No. 11 Edison 21-0
Adrian Martinez, a super star waiting to happen – and surely not for long – rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another, powering the Central Section’s fifth-ranked Clovis West High to a 21-0 rout of No. 11 Edison on Friday night in a nonleague football game at McLane Stadium.
Martinez, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound sophomore who can run as well as he throws, bolted up the middle untouched for a 56-yard touchdown on the game’s third play and the Golden Eagles (3-1) remained in control from there while snapping a five-game losing streak to the Tigers (1-4).
“That first touchdown felt great, especially on the first drive, because we’ve been starting out slow,” said Martinez, who carried 19 times for 146 yards and two scores and passed for 140.
Caleb Kelly, a senior supporting the advertising that has him ranked among the top five linebackers nationally, made 15 tackles, including four sacks as the Eagles answered with dominance following a 42-28 loss to No. 2 Bullard last week.
They’ll open the Tri-River Athletic Conference next Friday against No. 6 Clovis North (2-2) at Buchanan’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
“This was just a flip-around from last week, when we got embarrassed,” said Kelly, a 6-4, 220-pounder who has established a college short list of Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Texas.
“Bullard ran all over us; they did whatever they wanted to do,” Kelly added. “This week, we got back to what we do.”
Making that assignment considerably easier than Bullard was an Edison team in a stunning funk a year after going 12-2 and winning the Division I title.
The Tigers finished with 133 yards, and 37 of that came on LaRue Temple’s first-quarter run.
Edison, which will open the County/Metro Athletic Conference next Friday at No. 17 Memorial (5-0), has scored six touchdowns this season.
It took Clovis West a minute to score its first one Friday night.
Martinez, on a zone read where he has the option of handing off or taking off, chose the latter while racing into the stadium’s west end zone, and the Tigers’ homecoming was in trouble.
“We have a couple options on that play and it just happened to be me,” he said. “We needed this momentum after the Bullard loss. We feel very confident, especially in our defense, to win games and the TRAC.”
Clovis West’s defense also featured a caused fumble and interception by Ezra Cato Scott, an interception by Diego Cruz, a fumble recovery by Trace Garabedian and continual pressure up front with Kelly assisted by tackle Ceaser DeLeon and a cast of others.
The Eagles now lead 20-13-2 against Edison in a series launched in 1979, according to section historian Bob Barnett.
